Team profile

Turkey

Turkey start the U18 World Championship on the back of finishing fourth in the recent European Championship and will be out to match or better their best ever finish of gold, which they won in 2011 under the coaching of Sahin Catma. They were unable to match that result when defending their title in 2013 and slipped to a ninth-place finish. They also won silver at the 2007 edition, when they lost to China in the final.

Mehmet Nuri Bedestenlioglu

Mehmet Bedestenlioglu is one of the most respected coaches in Turkish sport and he has been coach of the U18 teams since 2007.
They won silver and achieved their best ever U18 World Championship result in his first year and earlier this year finished fourth at the European Championship.
Since turning to coaching he has won one Turkish League title and one Turkish Cup, but it is in his work promoting age-group players to senior teams and in leading a number of coaching initiatives that his work has proven more beneficial in the longer term.
