Argentina and Peru open with victories at Gatorade Cup

 

Argentina celebrate following their opening victory over the Dominican Republic on Thursday at the U18 Gatorade Cup in Lima, Peru

Lima, Peru, May 8, 2015 - Argentina and hosts Peru claimed victories against the Dominican Republic and Baja California as they opened their U18 Girls’ Gatorade Cup campaigns at the Niño Heroe Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Lima on Thursday.

Argentina, Peru and the Dominican Republic are qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship in Lima next August and are using the event to fine-tune their squads ahead of the sixteen-team event.

Argentina defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-9, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23) in 1 hour and 40 minutes, while Peru swept Baja California 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-22) in 90 minutes.

María Corbalán led Argentina with 20 points in the victory, followed by Candelaria Herrera and Anahí Tosi with 13 points apiece. Massiel Matos had a match-high 25 points for the defeated side.

The Argentineans were more effective in the blocking department (15-10), while the Dominicans dominated in attacks (49-42) but made 33 unforced errors to 21 by the winning team.

The top scorers for the winning side were Katherine Regalado and Nicole Abreu with 14 and 10 points, respectively. For the defeated side, Veronica Gomez had 12 points while Daniela De la Torre finished with 10 points.

Peru dominated in attacks (41-25), blocking (3-2) and serves (9-4) but made 27 unforced errors to 23 by their opponents.
