Debutants get off on the right foot in Peru

 

Chinese left-hander Yingying Li presented credentials as a feared hitter

Lima and Callao, Peru, August 8, 2015 – Defending champions China and vice champions United States won their respective matches as both sides debuted at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship on Saturday.

China defeated Serbia 3-1 (25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23) n Pool B at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima while United States dominated the Dominican Republic in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) in Pool C at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao. 

Also debutantes, Chinese Taipei in Pool A and Brazil in Pool D also collected victories with the Asian side needing five sets to subdue Korea 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-13) and the South American squad outdueling Japan 3-0 (25-19, 33-31, 28-26).

Hosts Peru improved to a 2-0 win-loss record with a five-set win over Mexico (22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 15-11) while Belgium also remained undefeated in two outings after a 3-0 (29-27, 25-22, 25-20) success against Argentina.

In the other matches on Saturday, Poland edged Thailand 3-2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-10, 22-25, 15-13) in Pool B and Turkey defeated Cuba 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-14).

Li Yingying led China with 23 points and Serbia’s Katarina Lazovic led all the players in the game with 24 points.

USA outscored the Dominicans in the blocking category 11-0 and Alexis Dawn Sun and Khalia Lanier topped the winners with 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Huang Ching Hsuan topped Chinese Taipei with 22 points, including four blocks and three aces, while Nyeme Alexandre and Beatriz de Carvalho led Brazil with 16 and 15 points.

Nicole Abreu led Peru with 22 points and Britt Herbots finished with 23 points in the victory of Belgium. Poland’s Oliwia Michalak finished with 23 points, including six blocks and two aces, and Tutku Burcu and Sallha Sahin were the main offensive weapons of Turkey with 9 points each one.
