Dominican Republic and Argentina go for gold

 

The Dominican Republic celebrate after their five-set victory over Puerto Rico in the semifinals of the U18 Pan American Cup on Saturday

Havana, Cuba, March 21, 2015 - The Dominican Republic and Argentina will play for the title of the third U18 Girls’ Volleyball Pan American Cup at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum in Havana on Sunday.

The Dominican side defeated Puerto Rico in a sensational come-from-behind five-set victory 3-2 (21-25, 26-28, 25-15, 25-18, 15-9), while Argentina defeated hosts Cuba 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 18-25, 25-22) in the semifinals on Saturday.

Massiel Matos and Natalia Martinez spearheaded the Dominican Republic attack with 19 and 18 points respectively, followed by Lisbeth Rosario with 11 points. Puerto Rico’s Dariana Hollingsworth had a match-high 21 points and Paola Salas was next with 19.

Arahí Tosi topped the Argentinean offense with 14 points while Brenda Churin was next with 12 tallies. On the Cuban side, Diaris Perez and Aidachi Aguero had 11 and 10 points.

In the matches for places 5-8, Mexico defeated Chile in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) and Peru won against Costa Rica 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-5).

Kathya García and Maricarmen Guerrero topped scoring for Mexico and Peru, with 11 points apiece.
