Germany win Pool B with festival of aces

 

Germany's Pia Kastner scored seven of the 15 aces registered by her side in victory over Serbia

Lima, Peru, August 11, 2015 – Germany played consistent volleyball to claim first place in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship with a straight-set 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Serbia at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Tuesday morning.

Germany finished with a 4-0 win-loss record and 12 points, while Serbia dropped to 2-2 with 6 points.

The German side put on a festival of aces with a tournament-high 15 winners from the service line led by Pia Kastner who contributed 7, also tops for the competition. Germany outscored Serbia in aces 15-6 and in blocks 12-6.

Hanna Orthmann led Germany with 21 points, including three aces and three blocks, followed by Merle Weidt who had five blocks and two aces among her 11 points. Jovana Kocic topped Serbia with 15 points while Katarina Lazovic and Anastasija Sekulic each had 12 points in the loss.

In a battle of aces, Germany took the first set 26-24 with Kastner firing five winners from the service line and Sekulic scoring three from the Serbian side.

Germany was in front 8-4 and 16-14 in the second set. Orthmann parlayed spike and ace for 24-20 and Weidt blocked Tasic for the 25-21 score.

Secured of first place in Pool B after winning the first two sets, the German side went on to win the third set 25-21 after leading 16-15 at the second pause.
