Peru, Germany, Italy and Russia top pools at Girls’ U18

 

Another big crowd at Eduardo Dibos watched hosts Peru against Chinese Taipei on Tuesday night

Lima and Callao, Peru, August 11, 2015 – Hosts Peru joined Germany, Italy and Russia as pool winners at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship after the conclusion of the preliminary round of the 20-team competition.

Peru won Pool A with a win-loss record of 3-1 and 9 points leapfrogging Korea who finished also at 3-1 but with only 8 points.

Germany and Italy obtained the full 12 points from their 4-0 record, while Russia got 11 points to go with their undefeated 4-0 mark.

Wednesday is a rest day with the full action resuming at Eduardo Dibos and Miguel Grau Coliseums on Thursday with 10 matches, including the round for the 17 to 20 positions for those teams at the bottom of the four pools.

In the Round of 16 on Thursday, Peru meet Poland, Germany take on Mexico, Russia go against Japan and Italy clash with Argentina. Also Korea play Serbia, United States contest Brazil, Turkey are pitted with Belgium and China play with Egypt.

In the round-robin consolation phase, Chinese Taipei meet Thailand and Dominican Republic face Cuba.

In Tuesday’s action, Germany downed Serbia in straight-sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-21) with 15 aces, including seven by Pia Kastner, while Peru defeated Chinese Taipei 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23) with Leslie Leyva and Nicole Abreu as the best scorers for the winners with 16 and 14 points.

Russia blanked Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) and Italy saw off Japan in consecutive sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 35-33) relying on 24 points from Paola Egonu.

Also, United States beat Belgium 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19), China defeated Poland 3-0 (25-17, 30-28, 25-17) Egypt edged Mexico 3-2 (28-26, 24-26, 17-25, 26-24, 17-15) and Brazil trounced Cuba 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-17).
