Peru subdue Chinese Taipei to win Pool A

Lima, Peru, August 11, 2015 – Peru defeated Chinese Taipei 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23) to finish atop of Pool A at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship with one point better than Korea.

Both Peru and Korea concluded with 3-1 win-loss record but Peru collected 9 points to 8 by the Korean side.

Leslie Leyva and Nicole Abreu were the best scorers of the Peruvian team with 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Maricarmen Guerrero chipped in with 11 points, including the one to seal the victory.  Jia Ling Chang and Yu Chieh Chen each finished with 17 points.

The home side took advantage of 40 errors committed by Chinese Taipei while giving away 19 points via errors. 

The winners held the margin in blocks 9-4 and the defeated side was better from the service line with an 11-4 difference in aces.

Chinese Taipei was in front 8-5 and 16-12 in the first set and won 25-22 despite a late comeback by the home side.

It was the opposite of the coin in the second set with Peru leading 8-2 and 16-11 before Chinese Taipei threatened.  Peru won 25-21.

Peru recovered from an 8-5 deficit and led 16-11 at the second technical time out. De la Peña closed with a spike down the middle for 25-15.

Peru won the fourth set 25-23 with the attack by Guerrero after a long serve by Chen Yu Chieh.
