Argentina celebrate their quarterfinal victory over Chile in a clash between South American sides
Havana, Cuba, March 20, 2015 - Puerto Rico and Argentina advanced to the semifinals of the U18 Girls’ Pan American Cup following victories over Peru and Chile on Friday.
Puerto Rico will take on the Dominican Republic, while Argentina will be matched with hosts Cuba in the final-four phase of the age-group event on Saturday.
Puerto Rico defeated Peru 3-1 (25-22, 14-25, 25-20, 26-24), relying on their accurate and strong serves.
Dariana Hollingsworth had 16 points to lead four Puerto Ricans who finished with double figures in the scoring. Ivania Ortiz and Paola Salas contributed 14 and 13, respectively, and Joscelyn Coronel added 10 points in the victory. Peru’s Maricarmen Guerrero and Leslie Leyva each had 11 points in the loss.
In the other quarterfinal match on Friday, Argentina beat Chile 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-17) on the heels of a 12-2 advantage in the service category.
Anahi Tosi led Argentina with 17 points, including five aces, followed by Brenda Churin and María Corbalan with 10 points apiece.
Saturday’s action also includes the qualification matches for the 5-8 positions, with Mexico taking on Chile and Costa Rica challenging Peru.
