Serbia holds off Poland in five sets

 

Callao, Peru, August 15, 2015 - Serbia with an impressive comeback edged Poland in five sets (20-25, 21-25, 25-8, 25-21, 19-17) in a qualification match for the 5-to-8 positions at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship on Saturday at Miguel Grau of Callao.

Serbia held the top hand in attacks 54-38 and had the edge in blocks 16-13. The winners committed 34 unforced errors to 36 by the Poland.

Serbia’s captain Katarina Lazovic topped the winners with 30 points, followed by Jovana Kocic with 14 markers. Poland´s Aleksandra Rasinska led all the scorers of her team with 17 points.

Poland surprised at the start of the game; with a tactical serve destabilized Serbia´s reception; taking advantage of opponent's mistakes and strong attacks of their spiker Oliwia Michalak won the first and second set by 25-20 and 25-21 respectively.

Serbia changes their attitude and reduced unforced errors until the third set, dominating 25-8 without any problems.

Although Poland took the initial control of the fourth set 5-0, Serbia came from behind thanks to strikes from their captain Katarina Lazovic and won 25-21.

Serbia kept the pressure on blocking especially with Jovana Kocic and closed a dramatic fifth set 19-17.
