European teams dominate quarterfinals at Girls’ U18

 

Russia lead six teams from Europe in the quarterfinals

Lima and Callao, Peru, August 13, 2015 – Six European teams advanced into the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship on Thursday.

Russia and Serbia, champions and runner-ups at the European Championships, head the group of teams from Europe in the Final Eight Round of the competition with Italy, Germany, Poland and Turkey the other four.

United States and China completed the list of quarterfinalists following the actions at Eduardo Dibos and Miguel Grau Coliseums.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Germany meet United States, Russia play China, Serbia take on Italy and Poland battle Turkey.

Russia added another victory defeating Japan in five sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 15-8) with Angelina Lazarenko and Ksenia Smirnova as their top scorers each with 19 points.

Serbia blanked Korea 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) as Ljubica Milojevic and Astanasija Sekulic each registered 12 points while Jovana Kocic and Anja Asonja contributed 11 apiece in the victory.

Italy downed Argentina 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) with Paola Egonu leading the victory with 18 points.

Germany stopped Mexico 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) with Hanna Orthmann the top scorer with 15 points, including three aces.

Poland entered into the quarterfinals with a dominant 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) victory over hosts Peru behind 17 points by Aleksandra Rasinska.

Turkey completed the group from Europe in quarterfinalists with a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21) victory over Belgium relying on a 23-point performance, five blocks included, from Tutku Burcu Yuzgenc.

United States advanced after a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15) victory over Brazil led by Khalia Lanier  who finished with 18 points.

China earned their berth in the final-eight round with a 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Egypt. China’s Li Yingying, Wu Han and Qian Jingwen collected 19, 17 and 16 points, respectively.

In the phase for the 9-to-16 positions, Mexico play Brazil, Egypt meet Japan, Korea face Argentina and Peru challenge Belgium.
